SERS Supports Give & Gain Day 2015

Employees and apprentices from SERS volunteered at Caerau Maesteg, rejuvenating a community garden, making a difference to the local community as part of Business in the Community’s (BITC) Give & Gain Day 2015 in Wales.

The team from SERS worked with local residents and a long list of Welsh businesses to transform a rundown community garden, into a place that encourages healthy living, sustainability and provides a soft learning environment for local schoolchildren. On the day there were over 100 volunteers helping to make the project a success. Building a 15 foot pond, fully fitted with a viewing platform and white stone path. There was assistance from the local Bridgend fire service, who helped to fill the pond. We also built, and filled six large planters for the growing of vegetables by the community, which can be sold in the local shop.

Give & Gain Day 2015 is the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering and is coordinated by BITC – the business-led charity that stands for responsible business. Give & Gain Day is a celebration of the power and potential of employee volunteering to make a difference in local communities.

By getting unprecedented numbers of people out volunteering on one day, BITC Cymru are helping businesses across Wales to champion the talent, skill, energy and passion of Welsh employees and the role they can play in helping communities prosper.

Speaking about SERS’ involvement, Group Director Mike Roberts said:

“We are extremely pleased that SERS were able to be involved in the Business in the Community Give and Gain Day again this year. SERS works closely with the local community and values the links which we have across South Wales. Both the employees and apprentices who were involved in this great day had a fantastic time, and couldn’t believe the transformation which was seen as a result of local businesses all working together to help local communities. Next year we hope to participate in Give and Gain days across the country in areas where we have operations – I would recommend any business who is not involved to give it a try in 2016”.

Commenting, Rosie Sweetman, Director of BITC Cymru, said:

“Last year we saw over 1,200 employee volunteers take part in Give & Gain Day – a real demonstration of the positive role that businesses can play in helping their communities become more sustainable.

“Give & Gain Day is a unique opportunity to bring together employee volunteers with community groups to share ideas, collaborate and learn from each other’s experiences and backgrounds. Volunteering experience also helps to build skills and motivation amongst employees, benefits that go straight back into the business.

“We can see that at the heart of employee volunteering is mutual benefit – because when volunteers give, Welsh businesses and communities gain.

Give & Gain Day 2015 is coordinated by BITC Cymru, the business-led charity that stands for responsible business. Give & Gain Day is sponsored nationally by Waitrose, in association with BT.

In Wales, Give & Gain Day is sponsored by the Welsh Government, RCT Homes and their supply chain partners.
